Mamadou Sakho is close to a return to first-team action after the defender joined his Liverpool team-mates for a training session ahead of their clash against Sunderland.

The France international hasn’t featured for the Reds since their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup in September.

Sakho, 24, has fallen behind Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure in the pecking order, although the former PSG man will fancy his chances of usurping out-of-form Dejan Lovren.

Meanwhile, Spanish left-back Jose Enrique figured in the rain-drenched training session before Saturday’s game at Anfield after a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Enrique started his first game since mid-October on Saturday as Liverpool edged to a 1-0 home victory over Mark Hughes’s dogged Stoke City.
