Rodgers delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Sunderland clash
Brendan Rodgers says Philippe Coutinho and Jose Enrique should be fit for visit of Black Cats
Brendan Rodgers has played down concerns surrounding Philippe Coutinh’s fitness ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Sunderland at Anfield on Saturday.
The Brazil international was an unused substitute as the Reds came from behind to earn a 3-1 victory at Leicester City on Tuesday night.
We are having to manage Jose and his games, but he has trained and should be available for the weekend
But the Liverpool manager is confident that the South American will be ready for the Black Cats despite a knee problem, adding that left-back Jose Enrique is also fit for Saturday’s game.
“Philippe Coutinho had a slight issue with his knee during the week but he should be OK for the weekend,” Rodgers told reporters at his pre-match press conference from Melwood.
“Jose Enrique is back in. We are having to manage Jose and his games, but he has trained and should be available for the weekend. Everyone else, it is as it was.”
Quizzed about injured striker Mario Balotelli, Rodgers revealed that the Italy international is still working towards fitness with the help of the club’s medical staff.
“He’s working with the medical team on a daily basis. I trust the team of people here that look after the injuries. Hopefully he’ll be available sooner rather than later,” Rodgers added.
Meanwhile, Rodgers gave the latest update on Daniel Sturridge, who is on the comeback trail after his third injury of the season.
“He has gone away to get some work in, with some of our staff, doing specific work. He’s coming along well.”
