Player ratings as Manchester City book their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League

Roma

Morgan De Sanctis Had a reasonably good game and made a fantastic save from James Milner. He was quick to come off his line and deny the space as he blocked his low effort. 6/10

Maicon Hasn’t been as effective in recent years as he has lost his pace. Was an attacking threat and made a few promising runs that on another day could have led to a goal. 5

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Seems to always have a mistake in him and got involved with an unsavoury situation involving Dzeko. Was booked as a result. 5

Kostas Manolas Decent performance from the Greek defender. Unlucky not to score after his towering header hit the post. 7

Jose Holebas Has a good understanding with the rest of his defenders and is always a threat going forward with his pace. 6

Radja Nainggolan Played a few exceptional passes in the game but was a little wasteful when he moved into attacking positions. 6

Seydou Keita Solid but unspectacular game from the Malian. His passing was efficient, but he struggled to keep up with the tempo of the game at times. 5

Adem Ljajic Disappointing game. Nearly scored with an excellent dummy that beat Zabaleta, but his shot comfortably cleared the bar when he was well placed. 5

Miralem Pjanic One of Roma’s most talented players but he was anonymous throughout most of the game. Created a few chances from set-pieces and corners but didn’t control the midfield as he would have liked. 6

Francesco Totti No influence on the game whatsoever. His performance was symptomatic of Roma’s overall display. He was devoid of any ideas and his miserable night was brought to an end as he was substituted in the second half. 5

Gervinho Roma’s best player but faded a bit in the second half. Was always a threat with his pace and caused a few problems for City’s defence with his dribbling. 7

Substitutes

Juan Iturbe No real impact on the game but he wasn’t given any service when he came on. 5

Mattia Destro Caused a few problems as he gave Roma a target to find in the middle. Didn’t have enough time to fashion any chances for himself though. 5

Manchester City

Joe Hart Great game. Could have done better from a corner that nearly saw Roma score. But made a few vital saves including the one from Holebas early in the game. 7

Pablo Zabaleta Always reliable and was excellent defensively nullifying the threat of Roma’s full-backs. Was rewarded with a goal late on as he toe poked a finish into the bottom corner sending City into the last 16. 8

Martin Demichelis Commanding game from the Argentinian. Relies on positioning and made two successful tackles, and won two aerial battles as well. 7

Eliaquim Mangala One of his better performances. Has looked shaky and rash at times this season, but looked much more composed today. Had a good understanding with his defensive partner as they thwarted any attacks Roma put together. 7

Gael Clichy Not really involved in the game in an attacking sense. Did not make any mistakes defensively and played his role in keeping things tight at the back. 7

Fernandinho Forged a good partnership next to Fernando and they gave good protection to the back four. Feisty in the tackle and full of energy. 7

Fernando Steady game as he distributed the ball well, and tackled with efficiency. Closed players down at every opportunity. 7

Jesus Navas Pretty ineffective game for the Spaniard. Plenty of promise but should have done better on a few occasions. Did set up Milner with an excellent through ball which nearly led to a goal. 6

Samir Nasri Scored with a brilliant strike from just outside the box. Has been in good form lately and seems to be filling in well for the injured Silva. 8

James Milner Another good performance from the dependable Milner. Gave good support to Zabaleta as Roma struggled to break them down. 6

Eden Dzeko Did fairly well as he used his strength to hold the ball and bring midfielders in. Lacking in confidence at the moment and doesn’t look like scoring. 6

Substitutes

David Silva Did not look fully match-fit when he came on but is always likely to create something due to his immense talent. 5
