Robin van Persie admitted that Manchester United “nicked” victory against Southampton on Monday night.

The Dutchman gave his side the lead in the 12th minute with a low finish, but the home side equalised through Graziano Pelle just after half an hour.

However, Van Persie guided in Wayne Rooney’s free-kick in the 71st minute to earn United their fifth straight victory in the league and lift them up to third place.

“Everyone gave absolutely everything and in the end we nicked it,” said Van Persie. “It was a tough game, they have a good team but we knew what to expect.

“It’s our fifth straight victory, so we are on the way up. We’ll just take it game by game. The next one is Liverpool, so we’re looking forward to that.”

The striker continued: “The first goal is a bit of a gamble, nine out of 10 times it doesn’t come off and you still have to score. I was a bit lucky there, it went through his legs but you earn your luck in those situations.

“I felt good, I’ve felt good over the last couple of weeks fitness wise. Tonight I could keep it up until the last minutes.

“That is what you want and then the goals assists and wins will come. We are happy we are on our way up now so we have to keep the momentum going.”
