Southampton 1 Man United 2: We were lucky, admits Louis van Gaal
Louis van Gaal admits that Manchester United were fortunate to win 2-1 against Southampton on Monday
Louis van Gaal admitted that Manchester United were “lucky” winners against Southampton on Monday night.
Robin van Persie gave the visitors the lead in the 12th minute at St Mary’s with a low finish, but the home side equalised through Graziano Pelle just after half an hour.

However, Van Persie guided in Wayne Rooney’s free-kick in the 71st minute to earn United their fifth straight victory in the league and lift them up to third place.
“We lost the ball too easily in the first half, I think. We didn’t have very good positional play,” said Van Gaal, whose side managed just three shots on goal during the game.
“The only chances Southampton created were when we lost the ball. That was not good in spite of our good result because we got a present also from Southampton.
“In the second half we were better. But I think Southampton played better than Manchester United but we were the lucky guys.”
Meanwhile, Saints boss Ronald Koeman was disappointed to see his side end the game without any points.
“We played attacking football and tried to press them,” said Koeman. “We deserved more but on this level the difference is detail in the game and how you handle it when opponents make mistakes.
“But we had more chances, played better and had more possession. I said to the lads we didn’t lose against United, we lost against ourselves.”
