Glenn Hoddle has praised Christian Eriksen’s defensive performance as Tottenham Hotspur edged past Everton 2-1 on Sunday.

The Denmark international netted his fifth Premier League goal of the season, cancelling out Kevin Mirallas’s opener at White Hart Lane.

But former England and Spurs midfielder Hoddle was particularly impressed by Eriksen’s defensive work against the Toffees.

“That’s the best I’ve seen Eriksen play defensively,” Hoddle told Sky Sports.

“How many balls he pinched, I don’t know. It’s not his forte – he’s normally in the pocket. But playing on that left-hand side we said ‘would he track back’ and he did.

“He went asleep once when Coleman got in, but the amount of times he pressed the ball and won the ball and set them up on the attack was probably seven or eight times.”

Eriksen took to Instagram on Monday morning as the Tottenham midfielder reflected on his strike against Everton.

“Good morning everyone :-) #thepicturesaysitall #coys” Eriksen wrote on Instagram.
