Van Gaal delivers latest Man United injury update ahead of Southampton trip
Wayne Rooney fit for the trip to St Mary's but Angel di Maria is still out with a hamstring problem
Wayne Rooney has been passed fit for Manchester United’s trip to Southampton on Monday night, Louis van Gaal has confirmed.
The United captain sat out the midweek victory over Stoke City at Old Trafford after picking up an injury problem during the closing stages of last weekend’s win over Hull City.
Meanwhile, Van Gaal also confirmed that Argentina international Angel di Maria will not be ready for trip to St Mary’s as he continues his recover from a hamstring injury.
“It’s not a bad injury, but I am not a doctor,” Di Maria told MUTV. “I have to say it like a manager, not like a doctor. But I think he shall recover very quickly.”
The Dutchman has also revealed that Jonny Evans is ready to return, while Phil Jones is edging closer to a comeback.
“Evans is coming back,” said Van Gaal. “He is fit to play.
“Jones is coming back but not fit to play. He needs training sessions and maybe also matches in the second team. But he is coming back. He is fit to train. That is also very good. We are seeing already light in the tunnel.”
