Manchester United are waiting to discover the extent of Wayne Rooney’s injury after the striker sat out Tuesday’s win over Stoke City.

The United captain who suffered knee and calf problems late on against Hull City at the weekend, missed the game along with Angel di Maria – and manager Louis van Gaal revealed that the England forward is set to undergo a scan on Wednesday.

Van Gaal also revealed that Di Maria’s hamstring injury is not as serious as first feared.

“Wayne has a scan tomorrow and then we will know more,” said Van Gaal.

“I’m very pleased that Di Maria’s injury is not so heavy. We’ve got more players coming back and we can see a little more light in the tunnel.”

Goals from Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata handed the Red Devils a 2-1 victory over the Potters at Old Trafford, a win which keeps United in fourth place in the Premier League table.
