Phil Thompson made for interesting viewing on Tuesday night as Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League following a 1-1 draw with Basel.

The Reds needed three points to finish as Group B runners-up behind Real Madrid but Basel midfielder Fabian Frei broke the deadlock in the 25th minute.

Liverpool substitute Lazar Markovic was sent off before Steven Gerrard netted a brilliant free-kick, prompting a frenzied reaction from Thompson.

However, the former Reds captain was brought back down to earth when Brendan Rodgers’s side failed to find a late equaliser at Anfield.

Fortunately for neutral supporters, Thompson’s range of emotions were caught on camera by Sky Sports as the ex-defender did punditry on the European clash.

Liverpool captain Gerrard accepted that the Reds didn’t deserve to qualify after a disappointing group-stage campaign.

Gerrard said: “I don’t think we deserved better. We have not gone out because of this performance, we weren’t good enough away to Basel and we let in a silly goal away to Ludogorets. You qualify over six games and we have not been good enough.”
