Arsene Wenger has taken the unusual step of naming his team for Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Tuesday night.

The Frenchman revealed his starting line-up during his pre-match news conference on Monday night, while also explaining some notable absences.

“To make it as simple as possible, I have 11 experienced players and six young field players on the bench. That means I have nothing to hide,” Wenger said.

“[Mathieu] Debuchy is back with us and he will play. [Wojciech] Szczesny is back in goal and [Per] Mertesacker, [Calum] Chambers and [Hector] Bellerin will play because [Kieran] Gibbs didn’t travel. Then you have [Alex] Oxlade-Chamberlain, [Aaron] Ramsey, [Mathieu] Flamini, [Lukas] Podolski, [Yaya] Sanogo and [Joel] Campbell.

“The players who needed it stayed behind, like [Santi] Cazorla, [Alexis] Sanchez and Gibbs. [Olivier] Giroud is not qualified.

“[Danny] Welbeck could have travelled but he had recently a little knee problem and took advantage of that for rest him.

“Sanchez had a groin problem for a while now and he has played 27 games. Basically it is more just the number of repetitive games we have.”

Arsenal starting XI: Szczesny, Debuchy, Mertesacker, Chambers, Bellerin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Flamini, Ramsey, Campbell, Sanogo, Podolski.
