Arsenal defender warns Gunners over top-four finish
Kieran Gibbs is expecting Southampton to challenge for a top-four finish for the rest of the season
Kieran Gibbs admits that Arsenal will have their work cut out as they bid to finish in the Premier League top four this season.
The Gunners are currently fifth in the Premier League table but just a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United after 22 games.
The north London club fired a warning shot to the league’s top teams as they sealed an impressive 2-0 win over defending champions Manchester City at the weekend.
Southampton are currently flying high in third place and three points ahead of the Gunners – and Gibbs is not surprised to see the Saints so high in the table.
“In terms of how the Premier League table is looking, the race for the top four places is just as competitive as ever, and Southampton are proving they aren’t going anywhere,” Gibbs wrote on a blog for Sportlobster.
“I’m not surprised to see them where they are, they are having a great season, and it’s a similar situation to what we saw with Everton in recent years.
“Southampton are having a great run, and probably don’t feel any kind of pressure because they aren’t expected to be up there.
“It’s going to be very interesting in the months to come and it goes without saying we need to be at our best week in week out.”
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal travel to Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon before a home clash with Aston Villa in the Premier League on 1 February.
England international Gibbs has made two assists in 17 Premier League games for Arsenal so far this season and has netted one goal in five Champions League games.
