Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger confirms defender deal
Arsene Wenger confirms that Arsenal are set to sign Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are on the brink of signing Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal.
A deal between the two clubs was struck on Saturday night as the Frenchman looks to bolster his defensive options at Emirates Stadium.
Wenger was quizzed about the Brazilian centre-half after his side’s 3-2 FA Cup win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday afternoon – and the Frenchman revealed that he expects the transfer to be concluded on Monday.
“The reports are accurate, yes,” Wenger said, speaking to BT Sport.
“It’s very, very, very close and I think it should be done tomorrow. We will be alright on the work permit front.”
Asked about what the 24-year-old Brazilian will bring to his side, Wenger replied: “He is 24 years old and has a good size, pace and is a good defender.
“Of course, he’s only played for one year in Europe and maybe there are some things to work on but the potential is there.”
It is understood that Arsenal have agreed to pay a buy-out clause of €20m to land the centre-half.
Gunners striker Joel Campbell is set to join Villarreal on loan until the end of the season as part of the deal.
Paulista could make his Gunners debut in Arsenal’s against Aston Villa in the Premier League next weekend. The north London club are currently fifth in the Premier League table.
