Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger confirms new deal for midfielder
Arsene Wenger confirms that Francis Coquelin is set to be offered a new Arsenal contract
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Arsenal are set to offer midfielder Francis Coquelin a new contract following his recent impressive form.
The French midfielder played a key role as the Gunners ran out 2-0 winners at defending Manchester City in the Premier League last weekend.
Coquelin, who spent part of last season on loan to Charlton Athletic, has made seven Premier League appearances for the north London club so far this season.
The 23-year-old has been with the Gunners since 2008 but has spent temporary spells at three different clubs, including Charlton, since joining Wenger’s side.
“I saw that he made huge improvements in training so I sent him on loan for match practice,” said Wenger, speaking at a news conference on Thursday morning.
“He took that challenge and he’s done very well. We will offer him a new deal.”
Coquelin earned plenty of praise for his performance in a holding midfield role for Arsenal in last weekend’s 2-0 triumph at Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal’s next game is a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, before a Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium.
