Arsenal transfers: Carragher urges Wenger to sign holding midfielder
Jamie Carragher says Arsenal must sign a new defensive midfielder by the start of the season
Jamie Carragher has urged Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign a defensive midfielder despite the emergence of Francis Coquelin.
The 23-year-old midfielder produced an outstanding performance in front of the Arsenal defence to help the Gunners win 2-0 at Manchester City on Sunday.
By the start of next season, I don’t want to still be saying Arsenal need a holding midfielder
The France Under-21, who spent last season on loan at Charlton Athletic, has helped the north London side keep three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.
Whilst Carragher feels Coquelin can underline his credentials for the problem position in the rest of the season, the Liverpool legend ultimately believes Wenger will need to sign a top defensive-minded midfielder.
“It doesn’t matter if it is this transfer window. They need someone,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Mikel Arteta was what you’d really call the first-choice in that position, but I’ve never seen him as a holding midfield player. He was more of a creative midfielder player in his time at Everton.
“Coquelin was outstanding at Manchester City. Is he the answer long term? Maybe have a look at him between now and the end of the season.
“By the start of next season, I don’t want to still be saying Arsenal need a holding midfielder. They’ve got to sign a defensive midfielder.”
Arsenal are a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United following their morale-boosting win at the defending Premier League champions at the weekend.
The Gunners face Brighton in the FA Cup fourth-round on Sunday before Wenger’s men welcome Paul Lambert’s struggling Aston Villa side at Villa Park on 1 February.
