Arsenal transfers: Wenger still needs holding midfielder, says Carragher

Jamie Carragher wants Arsene Wenger to address Arsenal's problem position

Jamie Carragher insists Arsene Wenger still needs to sign a top-class defensive midfielder in the summer despite Francis Coquelin’s recent emergence.

The 23-year-old midfielder produced an outstanding performance in front of the Arsenal defence to help the Gunners win 2-0 at Manchester City in their last top-flight outing.

The France Under-21, who spent last season on loan at Championship side Charlton Athletic, has helped the north London side keep three consecutive clean sheets in their last four games in all competitions.

However, Liverpool legend Carragher reckons Arsenal manager Wenger needs to sign a world-class defensive-minded midfielder if the Gunners are to harbour hopes of challenging for silverware next season.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “Coquelin played really well against Manchester City.

“But if we’re talking about Arsenal getting to where they want to be, they still have address that position in the summer, no question.”

Wenger has regularly been linked with a move for Mesut Ozil’s former Real Madrid team-mate Sami Khedira over the past couple of months.

Arsenal are a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United following their morale-boosting win at the defending Premier League champions.

The Gunners face Aston Villa at The Emirates on Sunday.
