Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger explains decision to loan out Joel Campbell
Arsene Wenger says Joel Campbell needs game time
Arsene Wenger says it is vital Joel Campbell gets much-needed game time after the striker completed a loan move to Villarreal this week.
The Costa Rica international sealed a move to the La Liga side as uncapped Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista made the switch to The Emirates.
The on-loan Gunners forward impressed as he made his debut for the Yellow Submarine, helping his new side seal a 1-0 victory over Getafe in Copa del Rey.
Campbell has made just four substitute appearances in the Premier League, racking up only 39 minutes of top-flight action in the current campaign.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference at London Colney on Friday, Wenger explained the decision to allow Campbell to join Villarreal on loan.
“Joel Campbell has extended his contract. He will go there because he needed games. I believe that here, things are a bit obstructed for him, because there are too many players in the same position.
“For six months, he worked very hard every day, and didn’t get enough chances to play, so I wanted to give him the chance to continue to get experience at the top level.”
On Tuesday, the 22-year-old took to Twitter to thanks Arsenal supporters earlier on Tuesday before the La Liga club confirmed the move.
Thanks to the whole family of Arsenal for their messages. I hope to make them proud #COYG
