Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0: Player ratings as Blues reach League Cup final

Player ratings as Chelsea beat Liverpool to reach the League Cup final

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois A brilliant performance from the Belgian keeper. Stopped Liverpool from taking the lead twice, saving efforts from both Moreno and Coutinho in the first half. 8/10

Branislav Ivanovic Provided a dangerous threat going forward down the right, capped off with a headed goal early in the first half of extra-time. He also looked fairly comfortable in defence. 7

Kurt Zouma Dealt with most tests solidly. He made a very good recovery after letting Sterling through on goal in the first half, by winning the ball back off the Liverpool forward, who was in a scoring position. 7

John Terry A solid performance from the captain, communicating well with the young Kurt Zouma. Dealt well with the pressure exerted on the Chelsea defence fairly well and the pace of Zouma helped when put under direct pressure. 6

Filipe Luis A tenacious performance. Performed some strong challenges when needed and provided a good outlet going forward. 6

Nemanja Matic Good covering at the back when Liverpool counter attacked. Performed well off the ball, being in the right position most of the time. However, he did sometimes look uncomfortable on the ball. 6

Oscar Looked a threat all game for Liverpool’s defence. He was positive all game in attack, as he aimed to go forward with the ball on every occasion. 6

Willian Assisted Ivanovic with Chelsea’s goal, after a brilliant cross that was placed into a perfect position for the Russian to head home. Also, a hard working performance yet again and is a valuable player for Chelsea, as he provides them with consistent performances both in attack and defence. 7

Cesc Fabregas Not his most effective performance. Struggled to get directly involved in the match but did string together good passes whilst on the pitch. 5

Eden Hazard When given time on the ball, he made life hard for defenders, with his silky dribbling and creativity. Could have put Chelsea 1-0 up 15 minutes into the second half after dribbling his way through the opposition defence but he fired the shot just wide. 7

Diego Costa No direct influence throughout the game. When he was involved, he put the Liverpool defence under pressure with his physical presence. However, could have been sent off for two nasty stamps on Can and Skrtel. 6

Substitutes

Ramires Hard working display from the Brazilian midfielder. Efficient performance both in attack and defence and could have wrapped it up in the second half of stoppage time. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta A solid performance coming on for the injured Luis. He dealt well with Liverpool’s attacking threat down the left. 6

Didier Drogba N/A

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet A rather unchallenged first half. However, fantastic second half from the under fire goalkeeper. He made a great save with his feet to deny Costa from making it 1-0 with a firing shot and also made a brilliant tackle to deny Costa an open goal. 8

Emre Can A very strong game considering it’s not his favoured position. He dealt well with Hazard throughout the match and he looked composed on and off the ball when put under pressure. 7

Martin Skrtel A solid game at the back for Liverpool. He dealt well with Costa, not giving him much time on the ball to be effective. However, he was lucky to not give away a penalty for a poor challenge on Costa. 7

Mamadou Sakho Played some very dangerous passes that led to Chelsea having some dangerous chances in attack. Dealt with most other pressure well. 5

Jordan Henderson A composed performance from the English international. Linked up well with the attack and helped their attacking game to flow. However, he was lucky to have stayed on the pitch after a bookable handball offence. 6

Steven Gerrard He put a brilliant ball through to Moreno who should have made it 1-0 to Liverpool within the first half. He worked hard all game, putting pressure on Liverpool’s midfield but it was just not Gerrard or his team’s night. 6

Lucas A tenacious performance from the midfielder. Worked hard to limit Chelsea’s attacking threat all game but ran out of legs late on in extra time. 6

Alberto Moreno Provided a very strong threat going forward throughout the game, especially in the first half. He should have put Liverpool 1-0 up in the early moments of the game after a brilliant ball from Gerrard. 7

Lazar Markovic A solid performance from the player starting to find his feet in English football. He did not have a big effect on the game but played with tenacity throughout. 5

Philippe Coutinho Again, a stand out performer for Liverpool. He is so clever on the ball and he threatened Chelsea’s defence all game. He made a brilliant run and carved open the Chelsea defence but really should have made it 1-0. 7

Raheem Sterling Caused the Chelsea defence problems, both on and off the ball, with his persistence all game. He put in a brilliant ball for Henderson, who should have levelled the scoring. 7

Substitutes

Glen Johnson He did not have too much influence on the match when he came on. He sometimes lost his opponent when defending. 5

Mario Balotelli Played like he had something to prove when he came on. However, he gave the ball away that led to Chelsea’s goal. Also, should have marked Ivanovic much better for their goal. 5

Rickie Lambert He didn’t have much time at all to influence the game. N/A
