Chelsea 1 Man City 1: Nemanja Matic hails ‘important point’

The Chelsea midfielder felt that a draw with Manchester City was a fair result

Nemanja Matic reflected on an “important” result for Chelsea after the Blues held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Loic Remy put the league leaders ahead when he converted Eden Hazard’s cross four minutes before half-time.

But the defending champions drew level moments later when David Silva turned a cross from Sergio Aguero past Thibaut Courtois.

The result means that leaders Chelsea are still five points clear of City in the Premier League table.

And the midfielder felt that a draw was a fair result in west London.

“I think it’s an important point for us and for them,” Matic told Sky Sports.

“To be honest, we expected three points from today but if you saw the game I think a draw is a good result for both teams.

“The table is the same with a five point difference and we are happy with that.”

Matic also admitted that he and his team-mates began to feel the effects of their midweek exploits against Liverpool in the closing stages on Saturday evening.

“We felt in the last 20 minutes a little bit tired but everyone gave 100 per cent,” he added. “It was difficult to run with the City players because they are more fresh than us.”

Chelsea’s next game is an away clash with Aston Villa in the Premier League next weekend. The Blues then host Everton before the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.
