Chelsea midfielder calls for fans to cheer Frank Lampard
John Obi Mikel believes that Frank Lampard deserves a warm reception on his return to Stamford Bridge
John Obi Mikel has called on Chelsea’s supporters to give Frank Lampard a warm reception when Manchester City travel to Stamford Bridge next weekend.
The Citizens head to west London looking to close the five-point gap on Jose Mourinho’s Premier League leaders down to two points and reignite the top-flight title race.
Lampard joined City from Chelsea last summer after spending 13 years at the west London club.
The former England international came off the bench to earn City a point in the 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium earlier in the season.
And Mikel wants the veteran midfielder to be given a good reception this weekend.
“The fans should definitely cheer Frank on. He is a club legend and I think that the fans will welcome him,” Mikel told the Daily Star.
“It will be strange to play against him. During the game there is no friendship – but there will be after.”
Chelsea head into next weekend’s game on the back of a shock 4-2 loss to Bradford City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
The Blues host Liverpool in the return leg of their League Cup semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night after their 1-1 draw at Anfield last week.
