Gary Neville runs the rule on Man United centre-half
Gary Neville backs Paddy McNair to blossom into Manchester United star
Gary Neville has backed Paddy McNair to blossom into a top Manchester United player.
The Northern Irish defender scored the winner as United’s Under-21 side beat their Liverpool counterparts 2-1 on Monday night.
You can see tonight he looks a real good player
McNair enjoyed a run in the Red Devils first-team under Louis van Gaal earlier this season, making nine Premier League appearances.
Former United full-back Neville praised McNair’s character after his confident response to a number of setbacks this term.
“He’s a good footballer,” Neville told Sky Sports. “Louis van Gaal has thrust him into the first team. He came to Man United as a No 10, he’s learning so much, and you expect so much of them when they go in the first team.
“He had a couple of unfortunate experiences, away at Southampton when he was substituted on Monday Night Football, but he’s come back from that and you can see tonight he looks a real good player.”
“That finish, a striker would have been proud of that,” added Neville.
“He was good in the first half, good on the ball in the second and actually when he went into midfield and played in the holding role, he showed he could play there too.”
Victor Valdes started for United Under-21s against Liverpool, although the Spain international conceded a first-half goal before Nick Powell equalised after the break.
The 32-year-old three-time Champions League winner took to Instagram following the close-fought win to reveal his delight at helping the Red Devils beat a bitter rival.
Valdes wrote on Instagram: “Was a great honor to win today with the unders 21 in my first game against Liverpoool. Well Done Guys!”
Valdes signed an 18-month deal with the 20-time English champions earlier this month after he spent a couple of months training with United following his Barcelona exit.
