Jamie Carragher reveals forward Liverpool needed to beat Chelsea

Jamie Carragher jokes Liverpool could have done with Luis Garcia at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night

Jamie Carragher has joked that Liverpool needed Luis Garcia to help the Reds beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Liverpool’s hopes of reaching the Capital One Cup final were dashed after Branislav Ivanovic scored a 94th-minute second-leg winner to seal a 2-1 aggregate victory for the Premier League leaders.

However, Carragher, who turned 37 on Wednesday, felt Garcia could have made the difference for the Merseyside outfit in west London, after all, the Spaniard is good for a “ghost goal” or two.

The former Barcelona striker scored Liverpool’s infamous winner against Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final at Anfield in 2005, sealing their place in the Istanbul final.

Garcia, who also netted against Chelsea in their FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford in 2006, started the flurry of tweets as he took to Twitter to wish the Liverpool legend a happy birthday.

Carragher was still suffering from a League Cup hangover as the former Liverpool centre-half digested Jose Mourinho’s first semi-final win against the Reds.

Garcia, who left Liverpool for Atletico Madrid in 2007, tweeted back to the Sky Sports pundit, praising the Merseyside outfit’s performance on the night.
