Jose Mourinho: Why I was so impressed by Liverpool
The Chelsea boss gushes with praise for Liverpool after League Cup semi-final
Jose Mourinho was full of praise for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool after his Chelsea side needed extra-time to beat the Reds and reach the League Cup final.
With the score 1-1 after the semi-final first leg at Anfield last week, Branislav Ivanovic’s 94th-minute header won it for the Blues after an enthralling contest at Stamford Bridge.
The hosts were denied a penalty in the first half after Martin Skrtel’s clumsy tackle on Diego Costa, who was earlier lucky not to be sent off for a stamp on Emre Can.
However, despite watching his side secure their place in the Wembley final, Mourinho chose to praise Rodgers and his team before anything else in his post-match interview.
Mourinho told Sky Sports: “I want to be honest and fair with them and say that they were there. They are a very good team. Great work by Brendan, changing the shape and the mode of play.
“The way they started the season was not going in the right direction and he was intelligent enough to change and to create a new team – this is a new Liverpool team – and a very difficult opponent.
“I’m even happier because we beat a very good team over two legs.”
Chelsea will play either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United in the final at Wembley on 1 March.
The Blues’ next game is a Premier League clash with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
