Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1: Brendan Rodgers disagrees with Jose Mourinho
Brendan Rodgers says that Liverpool would have been worthy winners against Chelsea on Tuesday
Brendan Rodgers insisted that Liverpool deserved to beat Chelsea on Tuesday night – after Jose Mourinho described the 1-1 draw as a fair result.
Rodgers’ Reds were held by Mourinho’s Blues in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final on Merseyside.
Eden Hazard gave Chelsea the lead from the penalty spot in the 18th minute after Emre Can’s clumsy challenge brought the Belgian down in the box.
But Liverpool battled back and deservedly drew level when Raheem Sterling raced through the Chelsea defence and finished coolly past Thibaut Courtois.
The Blues then had to withstand waves of pressure from the home side, with Steven Gerrard hitting the post as they pressed for a second.
However, the Reds could not find a winner ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge in a week’s time.
Mourinho said a draw was a “fair result” after the game, but Rodgers told Sky Sports: “We thoroughly deserved to win the game
“I’m delighted with the performance, disappointed with the result.
“We showed wonderful character. Some of our play was very impressive and it sets up the second leg perfectly because they’ve probably got to open up a bit more.”
The Northern Irishman continued: “It’s still all to play for. It was a great game and that shows the improvements that we’re making.
“We’re getting better with every game, you can see the confidence returning. We were very unfortunate not to win the game. We went behind against the run of play but we created opportunities.”
