Liverpool 1 Chelsea 1: Player ratings as Thibaut Courtois stars

Player ratings as Thibaut Courtois denies Liverpool a winner

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet Dived the wrong way for Hazard’s first-half penalty. Read a Fabregas dummy to deny Costa a shot at goal shortly after the break. 6/10

Emre Can Conceded a 17th-minute penalty after his poorly-timed tackle illegally halted Hazard. Recovered well, though, keeping Costa in check before a buccaneering surge from one box to the other.6

Martin Skrtel Solid performance. Clashed with Costa on a couple of occasions, came out on top. 6

Mamadou Sakho The France international’s passing improved immeasurably since his £20m move in 2013. He is starting to look like a top-class centre-half. 7

Lazar Markovic Certainly racked up the miles on the clock, but still lacks a cutting edge to his play. 6

Alberto Moreno Provided a constant option down the left wing. Final ball could have been better. 6

Lucas Leiva His contribution often goes unnoticed, but is vital. The Brazilian keep this Liverpool side balanced, allowing his midfield colleagues to drive forward. Booked after the midfielder clattered Hazard. 7

Jordan Henderson The Liverpool vice-captain was energetic, as always. Solid performance. 6

Steven Gerrard Long-range shot swerved wickedly, forcing Courtois into a good save. Hit the woodwork in the second half with a low effort. 7

Philippe Coutinho Lovely interplay around the Chelsea area. However, the final pass just didn’t find its desired target. Tested Courtois with a powerful strike in the second half. 7

Raheem Sterling Looked sharp, his link-up play with team-mates was good, but couldn’t break down the Chelsea wall in the first half. Different story after the break, turning Matic and darting past Cahill before his precise finish left Courtois with no chance. 8

Substitutes

Adam Lallana His powerful drive forced Courtois to make a world-class save. 6

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois (Man of the match) Took no risks as he palmed Gerrard’s 16th-minute over the crossbar. Could only wave at Sterling’s effort which ended up in the bottom corner of his net. Good double save deny Henderson and Sterling as Liverpool peppered his goal with efforts. Superb save to deny Lallana. 9

Branislav Ivanovic A comically poor touch in the first half suggested nerves. Gave away a couple of cheap fouls, solid otherwise. 6

Gary Cahill Crucial touch to divert Coutinho’s deft pass away from Sterling in the 12th minute. Another great challenge to take the ball off Sterling’s toe as the Liverpool forward prepared to pull the trigger in the second half. Left exposed by Matic for Sterling’s strike. 7

John Terry A couple of important headers, although he wasn’t overly tested due to Liverpool’s lack of height up front. 6

Filipe Luis Matched Markovic for pace, although one the one occasion that he struggled, the Brazilian did earn a booking for a cynical foul. 6

John Obi Mikel The Nigeria international drifted apart from his midfield partner, meaning he was unable to cover Matic when Sterling turned the Serbian for his equaliser. 5

Nemanja Matic Made a rare error for Sterling’s leveller. Allowed the Liverpool forward to turn and couldn’t catch the speed merchant, who finished past Courtois. 5

Willian Decent performance from the Brazilian. Helped his compatriot to counter the threat of Markovic. 5

Cesc Fabregas The Spain international wasn’t overly influential, but the 27-year-old made subtle contributions to his side’s performance. 6

Eden Hazard Won Chelsea’s first-half penalty. No danger of the Belgian giving up spot-kick duties, and unlike his compatriot Kevin Mirallas, Hazard dispatched his effort in style. Chelsea’s only threat. 8

Diego Costa A largely frustrating first half, tussling with Can on a number of occasions. Lucky not to give away a penalty after the striker clearly handled the ball in his own area. 6
