Liverpool can hold heads up high, declares Robbie Fowler
Robbie Fowler takes positives from Liverpool's performance
Liverpool can hold their heads up high after a commendable performance against Chelsea over two legs despite missing out on a place in the League Cup final, according to Robbie Fowler.
The Reds fell at the final hurdle after Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic’s 94th-minute winner sealed a 1-0 win on the night at Stamford Bridge after a 1-1 draw at Anfield last week.
Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side were unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions before the Serbia international’s extra-time header in west London.
But former Liverpool striker Fowler reckons there are plenty of positives to take from the League Cup tie ahead of the clash against West Ham United on Saturday.
“We gave a good account of ourselves against a Chelsea team who I think will probably win the Premier League this year,” Fowler told Liverpool’s website.
“They struggled to break us down. We more than matched them in every department other than the goals and I think [goals] will come for Liverpool.
“I think the potential is there. It’s plain for all to see. We’ve lost the game and we’ve lost the tie, but I think we can hold our heads up high.”
Although Liverpool are in eighth place in the Premier League table, the Reds are only four points behind fourth-placed Manchester United ahead of their clash against the Hammers.
Rodgers’ men finished as Premier League runners-up last season behind eventual champions Manchester City.
