Liverpool midfielder ignoring Jose Mourinho’s ‘opinion’
Lazar Markovic says that he has nothing to prove to Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho
Lazar Markovic insists that he has nothing to prove to Jose Mourinho when Liverpool host Chelsea in the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday night.
The Serb was heavily linked with a transfer to Chelsea before eventually sealing his move to Anfield last summer in a deal believed to be worth around £20m.
Chelsea were reported to be close to completing a deal to sign Markovic but eventually opted against activating the then-Benfica winger’s release clause of around £12.5m.
But Markovic, who has scored one goal in 12 Premier League games for Liverpool this season, says that he does not have to prove himself to the Portuguese manager.
“I will not play to prove a point,” Markovic is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“No, I will play like every other match and I don’t have to prove or show anything to him.
“He said I’m not good enough? That’s Mourinho’s opinion.”
Chelsea travel to Anfield on the back of their 5-0 thrashing of Swansea City in the Premier League, while Liverpool head into the game after a 2-0 win at Aston Villa.
The Blues then host the Reds at Stamford Bridge in the return leg of their League Cup semi-final tie next Tuesday.
