Liverpool should expect Chelsea backlash, warns Reds legend
Phil Thompson expects a Chelsea response following their embarrassing loss to Bradford
Phil Thompson has warned Liverpool to expect a backlash from Chelsea ahead of the second leg of their Capital One Cup clash.
The Premier League leaders squandered a commanding 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 to the League One side in west London in dramatic fashion on Saturday.
The Blues have little time to recover as they welcome Liverpool for the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final after a 1-1 draw on Merseyside last week.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson reckons the Blues will respond to the humiliating results, although the ex-defender reckons Daniel Sturridge’s potential return could help to get the visitors over the line.
“I think whoever Mourinho picks to play is going to be massive in their role,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“I think he made nine changes from the previous game against Liverpool. Everybody had the opportunity to showcase their ability and it went pear-shaped.
“Now I think he’ll demand a massive improvement, and that’s the only thing that worries me for Liverpool. How is this Chelsea team going to react?
“They’ve got to react better than they did against Bradford. I think it’s going to be very, very tight, but I fancy Liverpool to win it 2-1.
“Maybe Daniel Sturridge will get 20 minutes – we know he’s been back in training – and that could give everyone a big boost in front of goal.”
Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling, who has been linked with a switch to the Premier League leaders in recent days, cancelled out Eden Hazard’s first-half opener at Anfield last week.
The Reds haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since a 2-0 victory over Andre Villas-Boas’ Blues side in 2011.
