Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers gives Raheem Sterling contract update

Brendan Rodgers expects Raheem Sterling to sign new Liverpool deal imminently

Brendan Rodgers says he expects Raheem Sterling to sign a new Liverpool deal “imminently”.

The Reds forward has been in negotiations with the Merseyside outfit for a number of months amid reports Real Madrid could try to lure the England international to the Bernabeu.

Sterling turned in another impressive performance in the first leg of Liverpool’s Capital One Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday, scoring a brilliant solo goal to cancel out Eden Hazard’s opener.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of the visit of Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, Rodgers delivered an update on Sterling’s contract situation.

“Obviously the club are speaking with his representatives on it. I would think that will be concluded very imminently.

“You can see he’s very happy, it’s nothing to do with Raheem – he wants to be here. Hopefully we’ll get a solution on that very soon.”

The 20-year-old has emerged as one of Liverpool’s key players over the past 12 months, emphasised by Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge’s injury woes.

Sterling, who joined Liverpool from Queens Park Rangers in 2012, has scored seven goals in 30 appearances in all competitions this season.
