Liverpool transfers: Lucas Leiva discusses his future amid Inter Milan reports
Lucas Leiva isn't sure where his long-term future lies
Lucas Leiva has admitted that he is unsure where his long-term future lies amid reports of a move to Serie A.
The Brazil international has been heavily linked with a move to San Siro outfit Inter Milan in recent months, despite proving a key cog during the Reds’s nine-game unbeaten run.
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder was close to a switch to Rafael Benitez’s Napoli side in the summer transfer window, but Liverpool blocked the touted season-long loan move.
I can’t tell you what is going to happen because it is football and we really don’t know
Whilst Lucas isn’t surprised that there is speculation surrounding his future after a slow start to the season, the South American isn’t concerned about talk of a transfer.
“We all know the relationship I have with Rafa, I don’t need to explain that,” Lucas is quoted as saying by Liverpool Echo.
“If it wasn’t for Rafa I probably wouldn’t be here. Rafa was so important for me, as Kenny (Dalglish) was as well.
“It is normal when you are out of the team and have been at a club for a long time. There are always rumours in the transfer window and it will be like that until February 2nd.
“I just have to focus on what I can control at the moment and see what happens.
“I would be lying if I said I never thought about something new but I can’t tell you what is going to happen because it is football and we really don’t know. I just focus on today and leave the future to take care of itself.
“I am very relaxed and from my first day here I have always tried to give my all. I have been here eight years and I am not trying to convince people, especially those on the outside, that I am good or bad or whatever.
“It is always good to hear good things being said about you, especially when it’s from people inside the club. That’s where I want to feel wanted and respected. It gives you the confidence to keep going.”
Lucas is expected to start against Chelsea in the second leg of their League Cup clash at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
The Reds drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final mid-week.
