Liverpool transfers: Phil Thompson predicts Mario Balotelli sale
Phil Thompson tips Liverpool to sell Mario Balotelli at earliest opportunity
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool could sell Mario Balotelli if Daniel Sturridge returns to full fitness in January.
The Italy international wasn’t involved in the match day squad for the 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Balotelli hasn’t started a game for the Reds since a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League in November, making a string of substitute appearances despite the hectic festive period.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson reckons Brendan Rodgers will look to usher his £16m flop out of Anfield if the Reds receive a decent offer for the 24-year-old in the January window.
Thompson told Sky Sports: “I think they need to change things up and we need a bit more experience.
“We still need another striker. If you pin me down regarding Balotelli, he’s been in and out of squads – sometimes not even making the substitutes’ bench.
“To me, I would think if there’s an offer there for him from another club, then they will take it, as long as Sturridge is ready to come back.”
Balotelli has failed to open his Premier League account for the season despite making 12 top-flight appearannces.
The former Manchester City man scored his only two Liverpool goals against Middlesbrough and Ludgorets following his switch from AC Milan in August.
