Liverpool transfers: Thompson urges Rodgers to sign top-class striker
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool should sign a striker in January
Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to sign a top-class striker in the January transfer window.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Monday, the Northern Irishman ruled out any signings this month unless “something dramatic happens”.
However, the Reds continue to be linked with a host of strikers, including Lyon’s prolific goal-scorer Alexandre Lacazette and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson reckons Rodgers could be tempted into some business in January, highlighting up front as a problem area for the top-four chasing side.
“I always like to see another striker coming in and especially now with Brendan playing Raheem up front on his own,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“He doesn’t seem to hold complete confidence in Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini or Mario Balotelli.
“So I would like to see, and I think Brendan has said this himself, an experienced striker come in, like Gonzalo Higuain or Ezequiel Lavezzi. They’ve always been my favoured targets.”
Thompson reckons Rodgers could be willing to part company with Mario Balotelli or Fabio Borini if the Reds receive an acceptable offer for either of the Italian duo.
Thompson added: “If he gets the right offer for either Borini or Balotelli I think one of them could be heading out the door before the transfer window closes.”
Liverpool played out a goalless draw with Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
The Reds face Chelsea in the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final on Tuesday after a 1-1 draw at Anfield last week.
