Man City star hoping to learn from Chelsea’s ‘quality’ Nemanja Matic
Fernando talks up Chelsea rival Nemanja Matic
Fernando has spoken of his admiration for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
The Manchester City midfielder will go head-to-head with Matic when the defending Premier League champions make the trip to Stamford Bridge for Saturday’s late kick-off.
The Serbian sealed a return to Chelsea from Benfica in the January transfer window, whilst Brazil international Fernando joined the Citizens in a £12m deal from Porto in the summer.
The South American described Matic as a quality defensive midfielder, adding that he hopes to learn from the towering Chelsea star as the City man looks to improve his own game.
“It’s a specific position and one that is really important for every team all over the world,” Fernando is quoted as saying by Mirror. “I played against Matic in Portugal several times and he is a really great player. He has so much quality.
“There are not many players like him left now, I think, but he is one I try to look at and learn from as I try to improve the way I play that role. He has become incredibly important to Chelsea. I always try to watch these players.”
Fernando, 27, has scored one goal and has made one assist in 14 Premier League appearances following his summer switch from Porto.
Matic, meanwhile, has netted one strike and has created two goals for team-mates in 21 top-flight outings this term.
Chelsea are five points clear of City at the top of the table.
