Antonio Valencia says Manchester United should expect tough top-four battle
Antonio Valencia has warned Manchester United to prepared for a tight top-four battle.
Louis van Gaal’s side currently occupy the final Champions League spot thanks to a run of one loss in 13 Premier League games.
We’ve got tough games coming up against very good teams and rivals for our position
Arsenal are a point behind the Red Devils, whilst Tottenham Hotspur are three points adrift of the 20-time English champions.
United midfielder Valencia is expecting a close-fought race for a fourth-place finish in the closing months.
“It’s very open and quite tight in those top spots,” Valencia told United’s website ahead of the visit of Leicester City on Saturday. “We’re seven points behind second place and then a couple of teams are three or four points below us.
“We must fight hard in the remaining games to finish as high as possible. It’s a long season and we’ve picked ourselves up of late, so we need to keep the results coming for the fans.
“We’ve got tough games coming up against very good teams and rivals for our position but, if we keep the concentration high, we can achieve our aim of a top-four finish.”
Valencia has made two assists in 17 Premier League appearances this term, largely being deployed in a right wing-back role.
Van Gaal’s men suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by top-four rivals Southampton in their most recent Premier League outing at Old Trafford.
The 63-year-old, who was appointed as David Moyes’ permanent successor in May, has guided United to 11 victories in their opening 22 top-flight games.
