Man United dealt blow as Roma star Kevin Strootman suffers injury setback

Kevin Strootman is set to undergo surgery on his knee, say Roma

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their bid to sign Kevin Strootman as the Dutch midfielder prepares to undergo surgery on Friday.

The Netherlands international continues to be linked with a move to the Red Devils as his former national team coach Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his midfield.

Strootman made his return from a serious knee injury earlier this season, and the 24-year-old talismanic midfielder has made two assists in five Serie A appearances.

However, Roma confirmed that Strootman underwent a small operation on his knee on Wednesday to remove a mass of fibrous tissue, keeping the Dutch star sidelined for a month.

A Roma statement read: “Yesterday Kevin Strootman underwent further diagnostic procedures with professors Van Dijk and Kerkhoffs, who previously operated on him.

“The examination revealed a mass of fibrous tissue [known as Cyclops Syndrome], which it is advised should be removed.

“The player is due to undergo arthroscopic surgery in Amsterdam tomorrow, during which the ligament will also be assessed.”

Strootman has made two assists in six Serie A appearances following his return from a long-term knee problem in November.

The Roma playmaker took to Twitter to reassure his concerned supporters that he shouldn’t be missing for too long ahead of his surgery.

“There’s a lot of speculation in the media about me and I would like to explain to all the fans what the real problem is.

“In the match v Fiorentina I got a knock on my left knee. It’s bruised and therefore I should rest my knee for a couple of weeks.

“This gives me the opportunity to remove some scar tissue which has bothered me a bit after the last surgery and this will help me further in getting back to my old level.

“It’s nothing serious and I will be back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

The Dutch midfielder missed his country’s World Cup campaign due to the knee problem, as the Oranje finished in third place after beating hosts Brazil.
