Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal adresses Darren Fletcher reports
Louis van Gaal appears to hint Valencia target Darren Fletcher could leave Manchester United
Louis van Gaal has appeared to hint that Darren Fletcher could leave Manchester United this month.
The 30-year-old midfielder is the longest-serving United player in Van Gaal’s current squad, but the Scotland international has failed to earn a place in the first-team in recent months.
Fletcher, who missed almost two years with ulcerative colitis, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January amid reports West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United and Valencia want to sign the holding midfielder.
And Van Gaal failed to clarify Fletcher’s future despite growing speculation surrounding the United talisman, with the Red Devils being linked with a big-money move for Roma star Kevin Strootman.
“You are not sure,” Van Gaal is quoted as saying by Manchester Evening News. “Because it’s the transfer month, so you never know.”
Van Gaal added: “He’s a player of Manchester United, that’s the update,” added Van Gaal ahead of the game at the Abbey Stadium.
“Darren Fletcher is the only player who has won the FA Cup in my selection and he is also captain – one of the three.
“That’s the update I can give.”
Fletcher will be hoping to make Van Gaal’s starting line-up for their FA Cup fourth-round clash against Cambridge United at Abbey Stadium on Friday night.
The Scot has won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups during a 12-year United career.
