Mourinho delivers latest Chelsea injury update after Liverpool victory
Jose Mourinho plays down fears surrounding Cesc Fabregas' fitness
Jose Mourinho has played down fears surrounding Cesc Fabregas’ fitness after the midfielder was substituted during Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final win over Liverpool.
The Spain international was brought off in the 50th minute at Stamford Bridge in apparent discomfort.
However, Mourinho – whose side face Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday – revealed that the 27-year-old playmaker was withdrawn purely as a precaution with this weekend’s game in mind.
“Fabregas was his hamstring,” Mourinho told his post-match news conference. “Cesc told me he wasn’t yet injured but he would be in a few minutes, so it was more of a precaution.”
The Chelsea boss also revealed that defender Filipe Luis had picked up a calf injury, after the Brazilian was replaced in the 78th minute of the League Cup semi-final second leg.
“Filipe was a calf problem,” he added. “At this moment I don’t know [if they will be OK for Saturday].”
The Blues, who were dumped out of the FA Cup by Bradford City last weekend, are currently five points clear of second-placed City heading into this weekend’s crunch clash at Stamford Bridge.
League leaders Chelsea will face either Tottenham Hotspur or Sheffield United in the League Cup final at Wembley on 1 March.
