Pellegrini delivers latest Man City injury update ahead of Chelsea trip
Manuel Pellegrini confirms Samir Nasri and Eliaquim Mangala are doubts for Chelsea clash
Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Samir Nasri and Eliaquim Mangala will undergo late fitness tests ahead of Manchester City’s clash against Chelsea on Saturday.
The former Arsenal midfielder was struggling with a calf problem before the 26-year-old returned to first-team training on Wednesday ahead of the title clash.
Nasri’s France team-mate Mangala, meanwhile, is contending with a shoulder injury which could force the £32m summer signing to miss the Stamford Bridge trip.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference on Friday, Pellegrini delivered an update on Nasri’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s game.
Pellegrini said: “Samir has worked normally in the last couple of days,” says the Chilean. “Maybe it’s too soon but we will see if he can be on the bench.”
City were handed a boost after Diego Costa was banned by the FA for three games after the Chelsea striker was found guilty of stamping on Liverpool defender Emre Can in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.
City boss Pellegrini, who shares a frosty relationship with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, said he hopes that the Spain international takes lessons from his three-game suspension.
“He is a great player,” Pellegrini added.
“A very important player. He has his character, it is not an easy character but I hope for him, that this punishment, I am not trying to take advantage for the game tomorrow, I think it will be a good thing for him to change in the future because he doesn’t need to do it in that way because he is a very good player, a top player.”
Costa has scored 17 goals in 19 Premier League games this season.
