Jan Vertonghen heaps praise on Spurs team-mate Christian Eriksen

Jan Vertonghen has backed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen to continue his match-winning performances.

The Denmark international scored a decisive 88th-minute strike at White Hart Lane on Saturday to seal a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

Eriksen has scored four late winners in the Premier League campaign so far, with his eight goals for the season earning a staggering 13 points.

And Spurs defender Vertonghen heaped praise on his former Ajax team-mate after the playmaker produced another eye-catching performance.

“Christian has the quality to do it and I’m happy for him because he’s a hard worker and a great player, he can do it time and time again,” Vertonghen told Tottenham’s website.

Vertonghen, who has started Tottenham’s last 11 games, felt Spurs deserved to win despite leaving it late against the Black Cats.

“We were the better team and deserved to win,” Vertonghen added.

“They had a free-kick in the first half and Hugo had to make two good saves in the second half and that was it, I thought we did well.

“We showed character and fitness and we can say on the pitch now ‘let’s wait a couple of minutes for a last-minute goal!’ It’s always the biggest celebration!”

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side are three points behind fourth-placed Manchester United after their narrow win against Gus Poyet’s men.

Spurs face Sheffield United in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final on Wednesday night before a clash against Leicester City in the FA Cup on Saturday.
