Wenger delivers latest Arsenal injury update ahead of Aston Villa clash
Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez is a doubt for Aston Villa clash
Arsene Wenger has revealed that Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is a doubt to face Aston Villa.
The 26-year-old forward is suffering with a hamstring problem, but the Gunners won’t make a decision on the Chilean until Sunday.
Welbeck is very close. He is really, really, really nearly there
Speaking to Arsenal’s website, Wenger discussed Sanchez’s fitness ahead of the clash at Emirates Stadium.
“The squad will be exactly the same as last Sunday. The only uncertainty we have is Alexis Sanchez who has a hamstring concern, and that will be decided on Saturday. He might be out for Sunday.
“The only [other] difference is that Gabriel is available and we’ll check him how he is physically but he should be alright to be available.”
Sanchez has been one of the driving forces behind the north London side’s season, scoring 16 goals in 26 games in all competitions.
Gunners manager Wenger confirmed that £16m summer signing Danny Welbeck is nearing a return to full fitness after a thigh injury.
“Welbeck is very close. He is really, really, really nearly there. He will be available for the Tottenham game,” Wenger added.
The 64-year-old added that midfielder trio Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mikel Arteta are still a week or so away from a return.
“They are not completely there yet but they are not far. Jack should join in normal training in 10 days. Welbeck on Monday. That’s where we are at the moment. Arteta a bit longer,” Wenger continued.
Arsenal are a point behind fourth-placed Manchester United in the race to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
The Gunners lost 3-1 to Paul Lambert’s side in their most recent clash at The Emirates at the start of the 2013/14 campaign.
