Adnan Januzaj must prove himself this season, says Man United legend
Gary Neville discusses Adnan Januzaj's Manchester United future
Gary Neville says Adnan Januzaj has to “prove himself” this season after his recent return to Manchester United’s starting line-up.
The 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes in United’s last two matches against Cambridge United and Leicester City after failing to secure a starting spot since November.
Januzaj was linked with a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain after playing in just 12 matches under Louis van Gaal, but Neville never envisaged the Dutch coach allowing the forward to leave.
“That’s what I expected, especially as he’s played the last couple of games,” Neville told Sky Sports News HQ.
“We’re at a point now where Januzaj has to prove himself this season and I thought it would be a really good one for him with Louis van Gaal coming in.
“He seems his type of player; a winger, technical and gifted as we saw in his fantastic performances last season.”
The Belgium international burst onto the scene last season under former manager David Moyes, scoring four goals in 25 appearances.
This season, Januzaj has struggled to adapt to Van Gaal’s style of play, which revolves around keeping possession and shorter passes rather than the more direct play along the flanks.
However, he put in a solid performance for United’s 3-1 win at home to Leicester City on Sunday, and he is also expected to feature against Cambridge United in the FA Cup fourth-round replay at Old Trafford tonight.
And Red Devils legend Neville expects Januzaj to continue to be part of the starting 11 in the coming matches.
“I think you’ll see him play quite a few games over the next few weeks,” added Neville.
“I certainly didn’t think they’d allow him to go out on loan, no.”
