Arsenal 5 Aston Villa 0: Player ratings as Mesut Ozil shines

Player ratings as Mesut Ozil helps to inspire Arsenal to an impressive victory over Aston Villa

Arsenal

David Ospina Did not have much to do, but did well when called upon. Gathered well, made a decent save from Andreas Weimann and a great stop to deny Ashley Westwood late on. 7/10

Hector Bellerin Did well to deal with the limited threat down his side from Weimann and then the slightly more impressive Scott Sinclair, and capped it off with a fine, passed finish into the bottom corner from outside the box. 8

Per Mertesacker Dealt well with the physical albeit off-form Christian Benteke. 7

Laurent Koscielny Calm, composed and showed good positional awareness. 7

Nacho Monreal Got forward well and produced some good deliveries into the box. 7

Aaron Ramsey A relatively quiet performance by his standards, but went about his duties, which seemed more defensive than usual, capably. 6

Francis Coquelin Always busy harrying the Villa players and nipping at their heels (sometimes a little too much as he gave away a few fouls – but it’s price worth paying for his presence). Seems to be establishing himself as a first choice, above Mathieu Flamini, and deservedly so. 7

Theo Walcott Was very bright, especially considering this was his first league start in over a year. Full of running and pace as usual, and showed confidence and composure for his goal to take the ball off Giroud’s toes, cut inside and finish coolly. 8

Santi Cazorla Carried on his fine form he showed particularly at City. The Spaniard was unlucky not to score after running at the Villa defence and hitting the post from the edge of the area – though a little lucky that his penalty went in after Guzan correctly guessed to stand his ground). 8

Mesut Özil (Man of the match) The type of game he excels in – where he has space to work his magic and isn’t pressured physically. Showed a great touch to assist Olivier Giroud on the first goal, took his second brilliantly and showed arguably uncharacteristic desire. 8

Olivier Giroud A good run and great, dinked finish for the first goal, and generally held the ball up and brought players in well. 8

Substitutes

Tomas Rosicky N/A

Chuba Akpom Did well to earn a penalty and was lively, but produced two mediocre efforts on goal, one with his head and another after a clever run. 6

Mathieu Flamini N/A

Aston Villa

Brad Guzan Was not really at fault for any of the goals from open play, but should have got a stronger hand to the penalty after he guessed correctly to not dive. 5

Alan Hutton Cruelly exposed at this level. 5

Jores Okore Left gaping holes at the back, particularly for the first goal, where Ozil and Giroud were at least five yards away from both him and Hutton. Tried to play the offside trap, but just marking the man is easier. 4

Ciaran Clark Could not get a hold of any of Arsenal’s rampant frontline. 4

Kieran Richardson By no means the worst offender, but hardly covered himself in glory either. A bit out of position at full back. 5

Tom Cleverley Struggled to impose himself on the game. Judging by this performance against one of the big boys, Manchester United will hardly be banging on the door to get him back. 5

Fabian Delph Hard to think of anything to say because he did so little of note. 4

Carlos Sanchez Made some neat passes and was a little more industrious than some of his teammates, but produced little. 5

Carles Gil One of the more creative forces in the Villa midfield – though that is kind of damning with faint praise. Put in a great ball for Andreas Weimann which nearly led to a goal. 6

Christian Benteke Granted, the service has not been great, but looks nothing like as hungry or predatory as he did in his first season at Villa. 5

Andreas Weimann Made a great run to meet a Gil cross but should have done better with his header. 5

Substitutes

Scott Sinclair Showed some pace and attacking intent after coming on. Probably deserves a starting pace, and it would certainly be nice to see for a player who showed such early promise before his career stalled at Manchester City. 6

Ashley Westwood Fine effort from outside the area on the half-volley which, but for an impressive stop, would have been in the top corner for a consolation goal. 7
