Arsenal 5 Aston Villa 0: Theo Walcott salutes Mesut Ozil display
Theo Walcott heaps praise on Mesut Ozil after Arsenal thrash Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium
Theo Walcott reserved special praise for Mesut Ozil after the Germany playmaker helped to inspire Arsenal to a 5-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.
Arsene Wenger’s men dominated proceedings and took the lead when Olivier Giroud netted in the eighth minute at Emirates Stadium.
Cool finishes from Ozil and Walcott in the second half made it 3-0, before Santi Cazorla scored a penalty and Hector Bellerin added further gloss to the scoreline with a side-footed effort.
World Cup winner Ozil, like Walcott, has only just returned from a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury but has impressed in recent games.
And the England international was full of praise for his team-mate after the German collected the man-of-the-match award.
“Mesut has worked tremendously hard to recover from injury, like myself,” Walcott told Sky Sports.
“They always say it’s not going to happen overnight but it has for him – two goals in two games.
“I haven’t played that much with him since he joined the club, his touch, and his general play is fantastic. I’m very grateful to be able to play with him and hopefully we can both stay fit now and charge on from here.”
Sunday’s win moved Arsenal into fifth place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind leaders Chelsea.
The Gunners’ next game is a trip to Tottenham Hotspur in next Saturday’s north London derby at White Hart Lane.
