Graeme Souness says Arsenal are too easy to play against after the Gunners suffered a comprehensive 3-1 defeat by Monaco in the Champions League at The Emirates.

The Ligue 1 side are in pole position to reach the last eight after a handsome first-leg win thanks to goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia, Dimitar Berbatov and Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco.

Arsenal, and I’ve said it and I’ll keep saying it, are too easy to play against

Arsenal are on the brink of a last-16 exit for the fifth consecutive season unless Arsene Wenger’s side can score at least three times at the Stade Louis 11 on 17 March.

Souness, who won three European Cups with Liverpool, was critical of Wenger’s tactics, adding that the Gunners manager needs to add more variety to his midfield.

“Arsene is trying to play the ultimate football; creative and really tidy footballers on the ball,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“Well, all successful teams have a combination of midfield players: players who can break things up, people who work hard to put the player with the ball under pressure and go somewhere they don’t want to go.

“Arsenal, and I’ve said it and I’ll keep saying it, are too easy to play against. Tonight is a great example of an average team that has blown Arsenal away.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to halve the deficit at The Emirates before the England international lost possession in the lead up to Ferreira-Carrasco’s added-time strike.

The Gunners, however, have never lost against Ligue 1 opposition in France under Wenger.
