Arsenal legend backs Tottenham keep pressure on in top-four race
Paul Merson reckons West Ham United have hit a brick wall ahead of their trip to Tottenham Hotspur
Paul Merson says he expects Tottenham Hotspur to keep the pressure on in the top-four race ahead of clash against West Ham United on Sunday.
The north London side dropped three points in their most recent Premier League outing after a 3-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield last week.
Spurs drew 1-1 with Fiorentina in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie on Thursday night, extending their winless run to two games.
However, Arsenal legend Merson is confident that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will ease past a West Ham outfit that have failed to win in their four games.
“The Europa League is back and that will have an effect on Tottenham in the long run – but not against West Ham,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“It’s difficult to play on Thursdays and then again on a Sunday but they can put that to one side against a West Ham side who have hit a brick wall.
“Getting beat as badly as they did against West Brom in the FA Cup was a bad result and Tottenham can make it another bad day for the Hammers.
“Spurs will keep the pressure on in the race for the top four with a very good win.”
Tottenham are three points behind fourth-placed Southampton, who face top-four rivals Liverpool at St Mary’s in Sunday’s late kick-off.
Spurs make the return trip to Fiorentina in the Europa League next week before Pochettino’s men face Chelsea in the League Cup final at Wembley on 1 March.
