Arsenal transfers: Wenger may still sign midfielder, says Keown
Martin Keown reckons Arsene Wenger may be tempted into some deadline-day business
Martin Keown reckons Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may be tempted to sign a defensive midfielder on transfer deadline day.
The Gunners manager has been utilising 23-year-old Francis Coquelin in a holding-midfield role over the past month amid the continued absence of established star Mikel Arteta and Jack Wilshere.
Rather than filling a problem position, it would be as cover if Francis Coquelin gets injured
The France Under-21 international has been a key cog in the Arsenal side in recent weeks, helping the Gunners win five successive games in all competitions following their loss to Southampton on New Year’s Day.
However, Gunners legend Keown reckons his former manager Wenger may address the problem position before the 23.00 GMT deadline on Monday.
“Wenger might still feel that he needs to buy a new defensive midfielder before the window shuts on Monday,” Keown told BBC Sport.
“But, rather than filling a problem position, it would be as cover if Francis Coquelin gets injured, so he has someone else who can do his job.”
Wenger, whose side are in fifth place in the Premier League table, has been linked with a move for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira regularly over the past six months.
Arsenal are a point behind third-placed Manchester United after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
