Arsene Wenger compares Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal legend
Arsene Wenger says that Alexis Sanchez reminds him of Arsenal striking legend Ian Wright
Arsene Wenger says that Alexis Sanchez reminds him of Ian Wright – but with fewer bookings and less noise.
The Chile international has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers since his £35m transfer to Arsenal from Barcelona last summer.
He has scored 12 goals and made seven assists in 21 top-flight games this term and has netted 18 times in all competitions for the north London side.
Asked which former Arsenal player Sanchez reminded him of most, Wenger told a news conference on Monday: “Ian Wright… he is a bit like Ian Wright.
He is very friendly and bubbly every day
“He has the enthusiasm of Ian Wright. He is quieter than him but that is not difficult and he doesn’t get booked!
“Alexis is more with the Spanish players of course but he is loved by everybody. He is very friendly and bubbly every day.
“He is dynamic and he does both parts of the game. He’s important in the team because of that, because he wins you the ball back quickly as well. The transitions are very good from defence to attack and attack to defence.”
Sanchez is back available for selection for Tuesday night’s clash with Leicester City at Emirates Stadium after sitting out Saturday’s north London derby defeat by Tottenham with a hamstring complaint.
And the Arsenal manager believes that the former Udinese forward will benefit from having a few days of rest as he recovered from the muscular strain.
“He has had a bit of a winter break now, one that he didn’t really want,” Wenger continued. “But he got one and I think he will now be recovered and fit until the end of the season.
“For us it is important that he has no setback as, once you go into February, if you have a muscular injury and a guy has a setback, you say ‘bye bye’ as the season is over as it is six weeks out.
“By the time you come back to your full level it is April and that is why we didn’t take the gamble [by playing him at Tottenham].”
Arsenal are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table, two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.
