Bolton 1 Liverpool 2: Player ratings as Philippe Coutinho nets winner

Player ratings as Liverpool leave it late to book their place in FA Cup fifth round

Bolton Wanderers

Andy Lonergan After spending the first half as a spectator, he made two fantastic saves from Sterling and Can. There was nothing he could do about the two Liverpool goals, especially Coutinho’s winner. 7/10

Dorian Dervite The Frenchman gave a committed defensive display and made one outstanding last-ditch tackle from Sterling, who looked odds on to score. 7

Dave Wheater (Man of the match) The 6ft 5ins centre-half put everything on the line for Bolton, throwing his body into block all over the pitch. Wheater did not deserve to be on the losing side. 9

Tim Ream Performed admirably but was colossally overshadowed by his defensive partner. 6

Dean Moxey The former Palace player delivered a number of quality balls from set-pieces but did not neglect his defensive duties. 7

Liam Feeney Failed to get into the game in the first half but his early cross lead to Bolton’s penalty. 6

Josh Vela Started well and put in an excellent midfield display in the first half but faded into obscurity after the interval. 5

Neil Danns The Liverpudlian made a rash challenge while already on a yellow card, which is never a smart move. Unsurprisingly, dismissed. 4

Zach Clough In only his third start for the club, the youngster looked impressive – going forward as well as defensively. He forced Skrtel into a challenge for the penalty and is one to watch. 7

Eidur Gudjohnsen The veteran Icelander coolly rolled the penalty past Mignolet but should have scored a second with close-range header. 7

Matt Mills The makeshift forward chased every ball and caused the trio of Liverpool’s centre-halves all manner of physical problem, but lacks the necessary guile for a centre-forward. 6

Substitutes

Liam Trotter The midfielder came on for Clough in the 72nd minute and lost Sterling for the equaliser. 5

Liverpool

Simon Mignolet The Belgian dealt with crosses easily, often opting to punch. He had few shots to save. 6

Emre Can His assist shows his prowess as an attacking threat but the versatile player is, presently, not a centre-half. 7

Martin Skrtel The penalty was soft but the Slovakian made referee Roger East make a decision. Besides that, did very little wrong. 6

Mamadou Sakho While not the most gifted on the ball, the third of Liverpool’s centre-halves was untroubled by Bolton throughout. 6

Lazar Markovic The Slavic Musketeer-lookalike made one noticeable impression on the game – being substituted for an injury. 4

Joe Allen The central midfielder looks nothing like the player he was at Swansea. Substituted. 5

Steven Gerrard The dream of winning the trophy on his birthday remains but this was not one of the soon-to-be Galaxy midfielder’s classic matches as too many passes went loose. 6

Alberto Moreno The young Spaniard is not a midfielder and became lost somewhere on the left-hand side. 5

Adam Lallana The England international started brightly but came off injured. 5

Philippe Coutinho The tricky Brazilian won the game with a top-class strike but after a good first half, did little in the second until his goal. 8

Raheem Sterling His performance showed he is not a centre–forward and carries the best threat from wide. His goal kick-started his side’s revival. 7

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson He added more pace to the cup tie once coming on for Lallana. 6

Daniel Sturridge Former Bolton loanee is, on this showing, a long way from his effective best from the season prior. 5

Fabio Borini The perennial peripheral figure at Liverpool did little to influence the game. One tame header forced a save from Lonergan. 5
