Brendan Rodgers leapt to the defence of Dejan Lovren after the Croatian missed the crucial penalty that sent Liverpool crashing out of the Europa League at the hands of Besiktas on Thursday.

The former Southampton man fired his spot-kick over the crossbar after all of the previous penalties had been scored to send the Turkish side through to the last 16 of Europe’s second tier club competition.

However, speaking in his post-match news conference, Rodgers insisted that Lovren was confident about lining up for the Reds during the shootout before his missed attempt.

Rodgers said after the game: “[Dejan] was happy [to take a penalty]. All the five penalty takers who opted to and wanted to take a penalty were all confident.

“You saw the four before Dejan were very good penalty takers, who have had experience already in the cup competition this year.

“We were happy with the penalty takers and Dejan was confident. We’re obviously disappointed for him, because I felt in the game he played very well.”

Liverpool now turn their attentions back to domestic affairs, with a home clash with defending Premier League champions Manchester City their next game on Sunday.
