Chelsea 1 Everton 0: Player ratings as Petr Cech impresses

Player ratings as the goalkeeper impresses as Chelsea edge to victory over Everton

Chelsea

Petr Cech A point blank save from former Chelsea forward Lukaku justified his inclusion over Thibaut Courtois and that kept his side in the game. The Czech giant was otherwise untroubled. 7/10

Branislav Ivanovic The right-back was nearly the villain of the piece when Matic’s shot deflected off him in an offside performance. Otherwise, another steady game from the Serbian bar one moment of madness in a mass melee. 6

Kurt Zouma The young French central defender was selected over Cahill to nullify the pace and power of Lukaku and coped well with the big Belgian. He is growing into the team alongside Terry but is at times over exuberant and goes to ground too easily. 7

John Terry The captain did very little wrong and his guidance will be key for youngster Zouma. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta A yellow card in the 14th minute put the full-back on thin ice for remainder of the match. The Spaniard settle into the game to deliver a solid, defensively assured performance. 6

Ramires Rusty, but the normally energetic Brazilian has been an infrequent face in Mourinho’s first-team. 5

Nemanja Matic The Serbian giant delivered another expert midfield display. Matic pulled all the strings and also showed his deadball skills. 7

Juan Cuadrado In his first start for the club since his transfer from Fiorentina, Cuadrado clearly unpacked his coffer full of tricks first, displaying an array of shimmies and flicks in the first half. He faded into the second half before being substituted for Fabregas. 6

Willian With compatriot Oscar missing and Fabregas on the bench, the Brazilian was given the central role of the magic trio of attacking midfielders. Skilful enough to hold this position but too often his final ball goes awry but scored the all-important goal to maintain Chelsea’s seven point lead. 7

Eden Hazard The brightest spark of Chelsea’s trio. The Belgian is perpetually moving into pockets of space but was unable to unlock the Everton door. 6

Loic Remy The forward struggled to get into the game but received little service and was marshalled brilliantly by Everton’s back forward. Replaced by Drogba. 5

Substitutes

Cesc Fabregas Replaced Cuadrado and appeared to be off the pace. 4

Didier Drogba The Ivorian rarely touched the ball after replacing Remy. 4

Gary Cahill Came on in stoppage time for goal-scorer Willian. N/A

Everton

Tim Howard (man of the match) The All-American goalkeeping hero withstood everything Chelsea threw at him for 88 minutes until Willian’s cruel sucker punch. His comeback will be key in helping Everton rise up the table in the remaining fixtures. 8

Seamus Coleman Dealt with Chelsea’s free flowing attack consistently well throughout the game. 7

John Stones The young English defender is getting back to full fitness and his partnership with Jagielka is developing well. 6

Phil Jagielka Instrumental in keeping Remy and then Drogba quiet. The captain led by example. 7

Bryan Oviedo An adequate replacement for Leighton Baines at left back. The Costa Rican is performing well after his horrific leg break. 7

Muhamed Besic A Bosnian journalist said that water covers 70% of the world’s surface, and the rest is covered by Besic, based on his World Cup performances. After picking up a very early yellow card, the Bosnian spent the remnants of the first half treading water. Removed by his manager at half-time. 4

Gareth Barry The former Manchester City player was sent off late on for a petulant challenge, which led directly to Chelsea’s winner. 4

Aaron Lennon The on-loan Spurs winger started with his usual hustle and bustle but fitness is clearly a factor for him. Lennon could fit in well with the Toffees though after continued game time. 5

Steven Naismith The Scot tried to get into the game but failed. 4

Ross Barkley Pedestrian and uninspired. Barkley had no effect on the game. 4

Romelu Lukaku The former Chelsea forward will not get a better chance to score at his former stomping ground but his close range shot was blocked expertly by his former team-mate Cech. 6

Substitutes

Darron Gibson The former Manchester United midfielder did very little after replacing Barkley. 5

Kevin Mirallas Ghosts have been seen more frequently than the Belgian in west London tonight. 4

James McCarthy The Irishman is missing a yard of fitness but delivered very little. He received a mini head-butt from Ivanovic for his troubles during the contretemps following Barry’s second yellow card. 5
