Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho reveals his ‘favourite player’
Jose Mourinho names his favourite player, and it isn't Didier Drogba, John Terry or Frank Lampard
Jose Mourinho has named his favourite player, and perhaps surprisingly, the Chelsea manager didn’t opt for a Blues legend.
The 52-year-old was discussing his past title glories when the Portuguese reflected on his dramatic Serie A triumph in 2010.
Mourinho’s Inter Milan side had let a lead slip to give Roma control of the title race with just nine points available for the San Siro side.
I [will] never forget my favourite player: Pazzini!
But Sampdoria striker Giampaolo Pazzini scored a second-half brace to cancel out Francesco Totti’s opener and seal a 2-1 win over Roma at Stadio Olimpico in April 2010.
Inter were back in charge of their title destiny and didn’t falter as Mourinho went on to lead the San Siro side to Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League glory.
So, unsurprisingly, Mourinho holds Pazzini in special regard after his goal-scoring feats which triggered a series of events that led to the manager etching his name into the club’s history.
“We had nine points and we were one behind Roma. We needed Roma to draw one game so we could go up again,” Mourinho told a news conference at Chelsea’s training ground on Tuesday.
“It was the best championship I won because I won on the last match.”
Mourinho continued: “With three matches to go, we needed Roma to draw a game. If they win three matches, we lose the title. We were waiting for them to draw or lose a match.
“I [will] never forget my favourite player: Pazzini! He scored against Roma!”
Mourinho’s Chelsea side are seven points clear of defending champions Manchester City in the Premier League title race ahead of their clash against Everton at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
